To implement the overall national deployment for science and technology development, the Strategic Symposium on the 15th Five-Year Development Plan for Electrochemistry, hosted by the Department of Chemical Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), was successfully held in Xiamen on August 29, 2025, the concluding year of the 14th Five-Year Plan period.
The symposium gathered more than 40 leading domestic experts across nine core electrochemical research directions, including interfacial electrocatalysis, energy storage interfacial electrochemistry, bioelectrochemistry, hydrogen energy electrochemistry, electrochemical micro-nano manufacturing, operando electrochemical characterization, electro-thermal coupling catalysis, theoretical and computational electrochemistry, and electrochemical synthesis. The participants jointly outlined the high-quality development roadmap for China’s electrochemistry discipline during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030).
Based on outcomes from this strategic symposium and aligned with major national strategic demands, this article systematically summarizes the state-of-the-art progress of fundamental and applied fundamental electrochemical research. It further analyzes the core bottlenecks and key challenges restricting disciplinary development, and clarifies the overall development trends and priority research fields for electrochemistry in China over the next five years. The findings are of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of the electrochemistry discipline and enhancing the international competitiveness of China’s electrochemical research community.
