Three-compartment electrolytic cells are mainly applied to systems where anolyte and catholyte interfere with the stability of the reference electrode, or where the reference electrode cannot be placed inside the anode/cathode compartments. An independent reference compartment is added to prevent or minimize potential drift of the reference electrode during reactions.
